Synchronous Communication via Instant Messaging

This research article describes the overall benefits and drawbacks of using IM and Email voluntarily. The study indicates that students used IM as a source for information sharing rather than social networking. Although most people believe IM programs are best suited for social interaction students felt their use of IM was a good source for spontaneous communication.

Study of Graduate Students and their use of IM with "virtual office hours" by the faculty. This study gives strong positives and negatives when using IM as a source of communication in lieu of face-to-face communication. The study can be adapted for use in secondary education.
